Flying to Iceland: What Most Travelers Should Know

Although Iceland has several regional airports, most international travelers arrive through Keflavík International Airport (KEF), the country’s main international gateway. From there, many visitors continue their journey to Reykjavík and explore Iceland by rental car, guided tour, or other ground transportation.

Regional airports such as Reykjavík, Akureyri, Egilsstaðir, and Ísafjörður mainly serve domestic routes and help connect travelers to different parts of the country. Because Iceland is relatively small and famous for road trips, many visitors prefer flying into Keflavík and then exploring destinations such as the South Coast, Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes Peninsula, and other regions by car.

For most first-time visitors, flying into Keflavík and planning a road trip from there is often the easiest way to experience Iceland’s dramatic landscapes and natural attractions.
